Reserve Deputy Program

Since 1981, the Woodbury County Sheriff's Office Reserve Unit has been an integral part of the Sheriff's Office.  Reserves are volunteers from the community who take the time from their personal life to work as non-paid deputy sheriff's.  These highly dedicated individuals spend numerous hours training and working assignments. By Iowa law, reserve deputies are given the same authority and powers of arrest as full-time, sworn deputies.

The mission of the Reserve Unit is to assist the Sheriff's Office in any capacity deemed necessary by the sheriff, as well as working with various groups and organizations in the community.  Reserves assist with crowd and traffic control, training of full-time law enforcement, court security and transportation of inmates, and general deputy support.

The reserve deputy must be committed to training and must possess a high level of integrity, maturity, and respect.  As a reserve in basic training, you will be required to meet every other Tuesday night from 1900 hours to 2100 hours.  Once certified as a reserve, mandatory attendence is required at monthly meetings with exceptions.

Since the Woodbury County Sheriff's Office Reserve Unit is a volunteer, non-profit program.  We are supported by donations from the public; therefore, we do not provide equipment.  All equipment purchased by the reserve deputy must meet Sheriff's Office approval.
